Then, under the stars and by the lake, watch a curated selection of independent films, featuring works by women and LGBTQ+ directors and filmmakers in Texas.

2024 FILM SCHEDULE + Lineup

✰ 7 PM — RITUAL: A community Panel

Ahead of the film screenings, join us for a panel produced in collaboration with The Contemporary Austin. In this discussion led by Simone Alexander, Senior Manager of Engagement and Accessibility at The Contemporary Austin, we’ll hear from Austin-based creatives Chandrika Metivier, Ani Bradberry and Cierra Madison (aka DJ Wyldflower) on the rituals that shape their life and work in Texas.

✰ 8 PM — EARLY ERA COLLECTIVE FREESTYLE

Comprised of dancers from contemporary, hip-hop, tap, and ballet backgrounds, Early Era Collective will take over the Laguna Gloria amphitheater at sunset to perform one of their classic, community freestyles alongside a medly by DJ Wyldflower.

✰ 8:45 PM — The Front Festival Film Showcase

Gather in the outdoor amphitheater for our two-hour short film showcase, featuring 13 films by women and LGBTQ+ directors, editors, producers and talent in Texas. This year’s shorts explores themes of Texan ambiguity, love and concepts of home. The lineup includes:

HOW TO ATTEND

Earlybird one-day passes* for the Film Showcase are $15. Earlybird weekend passes* for the entire festival are $40. This event is 18+. Attendees under 18 must be accompanied by a parent.

BEHIND THE FRONT FESTIVAL

The Front Fest is an end-of-summer festival, featuring performances, films and creative experiences curated by Future Front.

Hosted annually in Austin, we put Texas women and LGBTQ+ artists of all kinds at the front of our lineups. Every year, over the course of a weekend, we celebrate the power of community and fundraise for Future Front’s Creative Future of Texas Fund. Formerly known as BABES FEST, the festival has seen more than 5,000 guests and showcased more than 500 women and LGBTQ+ artists since 2016. Learn more at thefrontfest.com/why.

In 2024, the festival returns for four days (August 29 to September 1) at The LINE Hotel Austin pool, The Contemporary Austin—Laguna Gloria and Cheer Up Charlies.

PREPARE YOUR VISIT

VENUE LOCATIONS + ACCESSIBILITY — The Front Festival will be held across three venues: The Line Hotel Austin, The Contemporary Austin’s Laguna Gloria and Cheer Up Charlies. All activities at all venues will occur on the ground floor and can be accessed by a wheelchair and other walking devices.

  • Directions to The Contemporary Austin – Laguna Gloria, 3809 West 35th Street, Austin, Texas 78703: From Mopac (Loop 1) head north from downtown. Exit at 35th Street and turn left (West). Follow 35th St. until it ends. You will pass Camp Mabry, Mayfield Park and Mt. Bonnell Road. The entrance is on the left at 3809 W. 35th St.

  • Service animals are welcome at Laguna Gloria. Additionally, leashed pets may accompany guests on the Laguna Gloria grounds. Please keep all pets away from the sculptures and be respectful of the wildlife and ecology of the site.

  • Please note our ADA-accessible pathways, as marked on our map of the grounds, includes the newly-constructed ADA-accessible ramp. Check-in at the Visitor Center for help planning your route, or call 512-458-8191 with any questions ahead of your visit.

PARKING — We highly encourage utilizing rideshare or carpooling as there is limited self-parking available onsite. All venues are accessible by Austin public transportation, too.

  • Limited public parking is available on West 35th Street. Parking is not permitted along the stone wall on the north side of West 35th Street between Mount Bonnell Road and Westwood Country Club’s service driveway or at neighboring Mayfield Nature Preserve. ADA accessible parking is available on the grounds of Laguna Gloria. Please see the gate attendant for assistance or email salexander@thecontemporaryaustin.org.

WHAT TO BRING — Bring a blanket or a fold-out chair to sit on. You’re welcome to bring snacks and non-alcoholic beverages, too! Picnic vibes encouraged.

OUR COMMUNITY SAFETY GUIDELINES —

  • All FFTX staff, volunteers and guests will be required to practice mutual respect, as well as demonstrate an alignment with Future Front’s code of conduct and values.

  • All events will be held in primarily outdoor and open-air spaces or have access to proper ventilations and well-maintained A/C systems.

  • Capacity is limited to reduce crowding of any kind.

  • All guests are required to practice mutual respect and follow APH’s COVID-19 Guidelines, which currently include:

    • At all levels, people can wear a mask based on personal preference, informed by their personal level of risk.

    • People with potential COVID-19 symptoms and/or exposure to someone with COVID-19 should wear a mask, regardless of a negative test.

    • People with a positive COVID-19 test and/or not fully vaccinated should not participate in an in-person Future Front event or visit a Future Front location until they test negative and/or they are fully vaccinated and no longer at risk.

  • Concealed or open weapons and firearms (including handguns) are not allowed at Laguna Gloria or throughout any venues at The Front Festival.

BEHIND THIS VENUE

The Contemporary Austin – Laguna Gloria is a historic landmark site located only five miles from downtown on beautiful Lake Austin.

Known for artist-centric exhibitions and collaborations, The Contemporary Austin invites exploration at its lakeside location Laguna Gloria (3809 West 35th Street), which includes the museum’s Betty and Edward Marcus Sculpture Park, the historic Driscoll Villa, a cafe and shop, as well as The Art School at The Contemporary.

Amongst its growing program of commissions, temporary projects, and a permanent collection, the 14-acre park features outdoor sculptures by artists including Ai Weiwei, Terry Allen, Carol Bove, Sarah Crowner, Tom Friedman, Anya Gallaccio, Ryan Gander, Liam Gillick, Nancy Holt, Teresa Hubbard / Alexander Birchler, Paul McCarthy, Wangechi Mutu, Clare Rojas, Tom Sachs, Monika Sosnowska, Jessica Stockholder, SUPERFLEX, Marianne Vitale, and Ursula von Rydingsvard.
