WHAT TO EXPECT

Welcome to New Movement.

Begin with an after-hours exploration of the exhibition IN A DREAM YOU SAW A WAY TO SURVIVE AND YOU WERE FULL OF JOY, then head to the roof and connect with fellow art and music lovers from all over Austin.

For our last session, we’ve invited Clancy Jones out for a live DJ set, as well as local artists Calder Kamin and Chantal Lesley to showcase their work.

Enjoy complimentary drinks poured by Little Brother, too, featuring Austin favorites like LALO Tequila, Austin Eastciders and Topo Chico.

MEET THE ARTISTS

CLANCY JONES (@FORTY1FLIP) — Clancy Jones (she/her) is interested in the application of sound and movement to explore the poetics and cultural parallels of dance culture as a revolutionary act of joy. Her dj work is akin to the work of translation. Often focused on the communicative inputs and outputs between mechanical languages and our human hardwares. She was born in Cali, Colombia, raised in Queens, New York and is currently based in Austin, Texas. Her sound reflects the intersections of her placehood in these landscapes and her identity as an immigrant woman.

CALDER KAMIN (@CALDERFUL) — Artist, educator, and advocate, Calder Kamin (she/her) transforms trash into beautifully crafted creatures and educational opportunities to inspire others to be creative and courageous about the future. Nature’s endless ability to reuse and adapt motivates her to eliminate waste and reimagine it as art. Kamin recently partnered with Disney to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Little Mermaid to inspire their audiences to transform trash into art. She sculpted a portrait of Ariel and appeared in two promotional commercials on the Disney Channel. Her 2022 residencies include BreckCreate in Breckenridge, CO, Aquarium Gallery in New Orleans, LA, American Landmark AIR and the Amon Carter Museum of Art in Fort Worth.

CHANTAL LESLEY (@CHANTALLESLEY) — Chantal Lesley (she/her) is a conceptual photographer living and working in Austin, Texas. Lesley is a multicultural, first-generation American born and raised in the Rio Grande Valley, located along the U.S./Mexico border, Brownsville, TX specifically. Being the daughter of immigrants from both Germany and Peru has brought upon a feeling of being stretched between four cultures and has led her to confront ideas that focus on identity and contemporary social and political issues in her work. Her work is driven by a demand to be seen and understood while uncovering the layers of her identity, and a way to turn the colonial gaze upon itself to regain her power and agency.
