This springโs book pick is Minor Feelings. ๊ฉ
On Monday, May 17 from 6 to 8 PM, you can grab your beverage of choice and tune in for a digital book club and happy hour led by bbatx board member, Alex Perez-Puelles, discussing Minor Feelings by Cathy Park Hong.
The meetings will be informal (feel free to be camera on or camera off) and we'll flow in whatever direction the conversation takes us.
You must RSVP for free or by donation (keep scrolling) to receive the login link.
โ WHAT WE'RE READING: Minor Feelings โ
Poet and essayist Cathy Park Hong blends memoir, cultural criticism, and history to expose the truth of racialized consciousness in America. Binding these essays together is Hong's theory of "minor feelings." As the daughter of Korean immigrants, Cathy Park Hong grew up steeped in shame, suspicion, and melancholy. She would later understand that these "minor feelings" occur when American optimism contradicts your own realityโwhen you believe the lies you're told about your own racial identity.
Hong uses her own story as a portal into a deeper examination of racial consciousness in America today. This book traces her relationship to the English language, to shame and depression, to poetry and artmaking, and to family and female friendship in a search to both uncover and speak the truth.
We recommend borrowing this book from the Austin Public Library, purchasing it from BookWoman Austin, BookPeople Austin, Black Pearl Books or exploring your options at Resistencia. You can also browse this list of independent, Texan book retailers.
