Kara Perez

Kara Perez is a financial expert and the founder of Bravely, an Austin-based intersectional feminist financial education company. Kara discovered her love of finances courtesy of her quarter-life crisis. Broke, underemployed and saddled with student loan debt, she realized that her lack of financial education was crippling her adulthood. After becoming debt free in June 2015, Kara created Bravely to help other women take control of their financial lives.

Kara believes in the power of Oprah, loves the color green, and can most often be found with her curls up in a bun, drinking her 80 oz of water every day.

Kara speaks at events across the US, including FinCon and the Lola Retreat. You can find Bravely on Forbes, Glamour Magazine, US News and World Report, Austin CultureMap, Austin Woman Magazine, and Lifehacker.

Hali Martin (moderator)

BBATX committee member Hali Martin is a digital marketer born and raised in San Jose, California (a.k.a. the Bay Area). Years later, they followed in their aunt’s footsteps and moved to Austin, Texas. Hali’s has experience ranges from programming and marketing for independent film festivals to organizing and writing a black feminist manifesto. Professionally they are passionate about creating effective solutions and lifting up voices of queer and queer trans people of color. In their free time, they give living room talks on sexual wellness, play board games and shop at the farmers markets. Hali can regularly be found reading a book or cooking a new recipe.

Kathleen Lu (moderator)

BBATX committee member Kathleen Lu spends much of her working time as a software engineer, fighting against the image of a tech bro. She deals in multidisciplinary studio practices including sculpture, oil painting, and fiber arts. She hails from Maryland and Chicago, where she picked up an interest in urban planning and the organization of spaces and people within the built environment. Oftentimes, you can find her spending time with her three chickens, Bread, Butter, and Florence.

JoAnn Vela

JoAnn started her career as a speech language pathologist where she quickly fell in love with learning about the brain and how it is connected to our body, mind, and soul. This lead her to obtain certifications as a Brain Injury Specialist and NASM Personal Trainer. JoAnn enjoys working with neurogenic rehabilitation populations, teaching about whole-body healing and implementing positive behavioral change principles. She quickly realized that these principles applied beyond the clinic and can help everyone. JoAnn enjoys discussing brain functions in hopes of reducing the fear of burn out and helping people identify science-based ways to support their brain health.
