As part of our STATE OF THE UTERUS workshop series in 2020, we’re hosting an Abortion Teach-In at our headquarters with cultural activist and digital organizer Emma Robinson, the author of our 2020 SOTU guide. On February 20, 2020, join us for a two-hour discussion around reproductive justice, abortion access and bodily autonomy.

β€” WHAT TO EXPECT β€”

The Abortion Teach-In is the first in a series of Teach-In's designed to educate Black Women/of Color using the Reproductive Justice framework.

Abortion access in Texas is difficult to navigateβ€”on purpose. Comprehensive Sex-Ed doesn't exist here, so many of us leave school without a thorough understanding of our bodies and our rights.

Led by cultural activist and digital organizer Emma Robinson, this Teach-In will explore the ins and outs of Abortion: What does legality mean when access is denied? Why is a conversation about abortion necessary in 2020? What does choice mean in a capitalist system? How does capitalism dictate the conversation around abortion? How is the conversation around abortion different across cultures?

β€” MEET THE PRODUCERS AND PARTNERS β€”

Afiya Talks is a program that uses media (books, films, etc) to inspire conversation for Black Women/of Color in Texas. Like all of you, we are expanding, The Afiya Talks program has two tracks for personal development: The Lesser Mysteries- spaces for interrogating what "Radical Self Care" means. And, The Greater Mysteries- spaces where Consciousness Raising and activism take priority, shifting how we see ourselves as radical. By focusing on these, we intend to conjure a world where Black Women/of Color can not only exist but thrive.

STATE OF THE UTERUS is an annual party for progress, raising funds and awareness around reproductive justice, community health and gender equality initiatives. Since 2017, SOTU has raised more than $31,000 for progressive grassroots nonprofits and organizations led by women and nonbinary folks. Our beneficiary list includes bbatx, Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas, The Afiya Center, Deeds Not Words, Casa Marianella, the KIND Clinic, Collegiate Mom Coalition, the Abortion Care Network, the Lilith Fund, Counterbalance: ATX, the Survive2Thrive Foundation, Flo Code, the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health, We Are Happy Period and Annie’s List.
