An Opening Reception For Jinni J's "Body, A Love Letter"

  • #BBATX HQ 916 Springdale Road (Bldg. 4 Unit 102) Austin, TX, 78702 United States (map)

Join us on March 21, 2019 at the #BBATX Headquarters from 7 to 9 PM to view a growing body of work by photographer Jinni J. The series, “Body, A Love Letter,” is an exercise in vulnerability and explores love and relationships, particularly with oneself. :)

Prints from the series will be available for purchase (ranging from $5 to $30) and guests will have the opportunity to sign up for portraits sessions with Jinni J. to contribute to the growing series. The artist will also participate in a public Q&A around the series and her work at 8:00 PM. And the #BBATX team will take a quick moment to introduce the other 13 artists in our 2019 residency program.

Complimentary beverages provided. The show is free.99 (with RSVP) and people-friendly.

— BEHIND “BODY, A LOVE LETTER” —

“The series in this show, was really a happy accident.

I didn’t realize at the time that I was building towards something bigger.

All I had in mind was I need to be kinder to myself.

At the start of this project I was coming out of a long-term relationship and feeling all the emotions that come with that.

Single and at times feeling lonely, at times feeling unlovable.

I was starting to become more aware of the mean statements I was telling myself.

That’s when I started to put words on the outside of myself and my environment.

I’d be having a rough day or just feeling self-critical and it became an exercise to flip it.

To make it something sweet or encouraging.

All of the photos here are un-edited and taken on my phone.

This is unlike all my other work, in that I normally do not photograph myself or take photos on my phone. Typically this is not anything that I would print or show, but this in itself is an exercise in vulnerability for myself. These photos are now a part of a growing series* called Body, A Love Letter. I have been bringing this exercise to other people in the form of pop-up photoshoots and sessions at my studio in which I walk people through a series of questions and we arrive at a statement they need in the moment. I then photograph them with the kind words living on the outside. Everyone struggles to be loving to themselves, but I hope these images serve as a little reminder that you can be.”

— BEHIND #BBATX’S RESIDENCY —

From March to September each year, BBATX curates a monthly residency highlighting the work of 10 to 15, Texas-based women and nonbinary visual and musical artists. Beyond the monthly features from March to September, resident artists work with the #BBATX team and its collaborators to produce site-specific commissions and exhibitions within our programming. Throughout the year, we also invite the public to learn more about the artists’ process, approach and the sustainability of their practice through various community events, exhibitions and collaborations, while resident artists apply their skills and expertise toward community issues. About #bossbabesATX: We’re a Texas-based nonprofit that amplifies and connects women and nonbinary creatives, entrepreneurs and organizers. We create space to share our crafts, catalyze multi-industry coalitions, promote intersectionality across disciplines, seek guidance and provide each other with practical and emotional resources. Anyone interested in our mission, core values, and initiatives are invited to participate—and learn more about how intersectional gender equality can improve their daily lives. We provide 1500 opportunities to women and nonbinary creatives, entrepreneurs and community organizers per year. More than 15,000+ community members also annually attend our showcases, markets and dialogues—and in the last three years, our programs generated an additional $1million for the Austin economy. So, whether you apply to participate in one of our programs, attend our workshops, conferences and dialogues, or come out to a festival or market to support the community we’re building, you’re a member of this movement. All babes, all people, are welcome. :) Learn more at bossbabes.org.
