On August 15 from 7 to 9 PM at the #BBATX Headquarters, we’ll explore the intersections of body positivity and social justice, how to politicize our understanding of body image and the radical steps we can take to comfortably live in the skin we’re occupying.
This panel will be moderated by #BBATX committee member Sydney Greene and joined by body-positive fitness instructor and artist Erica Nix, Fat Bottom Cabaret director and artist Nikki DaVaughn and community organizer and LGBTQIA+ rights activist Briona Jenkins. Tickets are $10 and drinks will be supplied by our friends at Dulce Vida Tequila (sober options will also be available). Capacity is limited. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.

Sydney Greene is a creative based in Austin, Texas, where by day, she works in Texas politics, and by night, she's a freelance journalist. Originally from Charlotte, North Carolina, Sydney moved to Austin in 2018 for a fellowship with the Texas Tribune, where she reported on immigration, healthcare, and politics. Currently, Sydney works for a political consulting firm in Austin, where she helps progressive candidates, clients, and organizations elevate and deliver their messages and ideas across Texas through print and digital communications. When she's not helping run campaigns, Sydney writes and reports on gender, culture, and lifestyle. Her writing has been featured in variety of publications including Texas Monthly, The Austin Chronicle, Teen Vogue, USA Today, and more. Sydney's personal and professional goals are to bring marginalized voices to the forefront of our policies and conversations through innovative storytelling and collaborative community action.
Recently given the title “The love child of Oprah, Beyonce, and Michelle Obama,” Briona Jenkins is a public speaker, activist for the LGBTQIA, female, and people of color communities, and has years of experience using her platform to evoke change.
Originally from Hamden, Connecticut, Bri grew up very involved in extracurricular activities in particular volleyball and student government which is how she first learned of her leadership skills. She attended Albertus Magnus College, a small Liberal Arts college rich in the Dominican Tradition, which is where she completed her undergrad as a Sociology major with a concentration in Social Work.
From 2012 until now Bri has been working at nonprofit organizations where she has been able to work with a wide variety of individuals including adults and children with development disabilities, single adults and families experiencing homelessness, and now working in development at an organization that serves LGBTQIA+ youth and young adults.
When not at work Bri is very involved in the Austin community. She recently completed New Leaders Council six-month institute and signed on to be the Co-Director of the Austin Chapter’s Board. She has served on the boards of Keep Austin Fed and Austin Black Pride. You can also find her on panels all around town or guest hosting on podcasts. She was, most recently, nominated for the 2019’s Austin Forty Under Forty Award. She was also a featured speaker at STATE OF THE UTERUS 2019.
Fun Facts: Bri reads tarot cards, hosts a podcast called Queer For It with three of her friends, and is always ready to sing some Adele, Celine Dion, or Whitney Houston at karaoke.
Erica Nix is on a mission to make working out fun again—while showing the world how to exercise their rights. Nix is also the former owner of TRANSFORM, a body-positive, queer-friendly exercise studio.
Nikki DaVaughn is a writer, body positivity activist, story teller and all around performer. She is the Founder and Director of the award winning Fat Bottom Cabaret, Texas' only plus size cabaret troupe; and Co-Producer of Midnight Menagerie, a Powerhouse Collective showcasing performers that are queer, of color or of size. She spends her time participating in shenanigry and musing about what it's like to be fat and Black in Texas.
