On July 13 at Byron & Blue, we'll host the first event in our summer installation of SHE TALKS, exploring lifestyle design.
We've all heard it before: "Social life. Work. Sleep. Pick two." So, what if you pick three? And then add a fourth—like freelance gigs or community involvement? How do you make it work (and when/should you make it work)?
Presented in partnership with Aceable, SHE TALKS: Confessions of a Side Hustler will feature five panelists, chatting their holistic approach to work/life balance, prioritization, time management and identity. There will be two more sessions in this series; stay tuned!
Meet the panelists for Session I:
Virginia Cumberbatch began serving as Director of the Community Engagement Center (CEC) in the fall of 2016. The CEC is an arm of The University of Texas' Division of Diversity and Community Engagement focused on connecting the resources of the university to the community to address concerns of equity and access in education, housing, health-care and social justice. In 2015 she co-founded HUX STORYHOUSE, LLC, with her brother, a creative strategies collective that uses culturally relevant storytelling to help organizations engage thoughtfully and authentically with markets across the Black Diaspora.
Sara Inés Calderón is an entrepreneur, software engineer, writer and speaker based in Austin, Texas. Sara Inés has written for a variety of publications, including TechCrunch and Vice, as well as several Texas newspapers, operates her own software company, Tercera, and works as a front end developer. She serves as Director and Evangelist for Women Who Code Austin, co-founded the Austin Diversity Hackathon, and has won several awards at hackathons. Her current passions include trying to make the perfect salsa ranchera, yoga and nail art. She writes and speaks regularly about diversity in tech and tweets at @SaraChicaD.
Miriam Conner is a curator, artist manager, creative-space-maker and event producer. She has been in Austin for 25 years by way of New Orleans, Louisiana. Graduating from St. Stephens Episcopal High School, she then received a Bachelors of Fine Art in Photography from the California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles. After graduating, Miriam came home to Austin and began managing Pine Street Station (an Artist warehouse and gallery) for two years, and has since planned countless art shows, in addition to co-founding Topology Art Warehouse. She has also worked with SXSW, Art Outside, Six Square - Austin's Black Cultural District and The City of Austin and more.
Rachel Johnson is a millennial food person; she writes about food, all she Instagrams is food, and she just can't stop talking about it. After graduating from Florida State University in 2010, she interned at Bon Appetit Magazine and trained as a food stylist at Cooking Light Magazine. Her first cookbook, "Stupid Good: A Shut Up and Cook Book" was published in 2014, encouraging the merits of fresh, vibrant food and cooking for yourself as a twentysomething. Today, Rachel works as a freelance food writer and photographer specializing in online food media and manages her brand, 'Stupid Good Food'. She lives in Austin with her boyfriend, dog, and full pantry.
Faiza Kracheni currently serves as Austin School of Film's Education & Programming Director. In addition to her involvement with Austin School of Film, she is an active artist and musician within the Austin community.
